Apollo 16 was the tenth manned mission in the United States Apollo space program, the fifth and penultimate to land on the Moon and the first to land in the lunar highlands. The second of the so-called “J missions,” it was crewed by Commander John Young, Lunar Module Pilot Charles Duke and Command Module Pilot Ken Mattingly. Launched from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 12:54 PM EST on April 16, 1972, the mission lasted 11 days, 1 hour, and 51 minutes, and concluded at 2:45 PM EST on April 27.
And on Thursday, September 8 2016 at Blank Space on Cherokee St. Saint Louis MO, we landed again. Not the first but not the last and on this landing there was a mile marker placed at ground zero for the Hip-hop industry in St. Louis. Blank Space is known for putting on some great low key shows with music in every genre. They have a space that describes the music scene here perfectly too. They have a bar in an open space upstairs and in the basement they hide a little stage in the back corner. The old stonewalls are painted black and the space is lit with just enough light to cover the stage. The eight-foot ceiling doesn’t leave any room for your girlfriend to get on your shoulders but the space does cause some intimacy for the crowd. Everyone is packed together down there and on a cold night its perfect to keep warm, but on a late summer night the heat turns up.
As everyone parades in for the show they are greeted with music videos produced by the host of the show Mike Roth, whose 30th birthday is the reason to celebrate. Mike is known for producing music videos for a lot of hip-hop artists in St. Louis. On Facebook he’s know as Louis Quatorze and his website is www.louisquatorze.org. Check out his work. The guest list for this show reflects his portfolio and the lineup is filled with some of St. Louis’s most up and coming artists. And the artists are all working hard to entertain and enlighten those who are interested. The line-up included J’Demul, Less, Anthony Lucius, Najii Person, The Knuckles, with DJ MAHF providing the sounds and special guest appearance from Mvstermind; all of the artists putting out hip-hop inspired music and all giving a unique perspective of sound and message.
Keep an ear out for new music from all of these artists. They put their heart and soul and money into their work and this is what inspires and empowers the creative to keep creating. To find that feeling of attending a live show and getting chills when you hear a song from someone you may have never heard before. This is what drives the mind to create. It’s the feeling of connecting with your peers on some level known or not. There is something in performing and watching a performance that feels like an addiction. These artists are addicted to creating beautiful work because they are all beautiful humans. They add to this unexpected Midwest culture and lifestyle that we try to find. You may not be able to get out to the shows but we will do our best to link you to the information and take some sweet pics.
